Broken Window or Damaged Door Leaving Your Property Exposed?
A damaged window, door or shopfront can usually be secured temporarily while the correct permanent repair is arranged. Boarding covers the opening, restricts further access and helps reduce exposure to the weather.
Do not move loose glass or attempt to cover a large or unstable opening yourself. Call 0114 403 1258 and describe what has been damaged, the approximate size of the opening and whether broken glass is present. This helps us assess the likely work before attendance.
What Is Emergency Boarding Up?
Emergency boarding up is the temporary covering and securing of a broken or exposed window, door or shopfront. It helps make the damaged area safer, restrict unauthorised access and reduce exposure to the weather while the correct permanent repair is arranged.
Important: Emergency boarding is a temporary security measure. It does not replace damaged glass, repair a door or complete the permanent restoration.
When Is Emergency Boarding Up Needed?
Emergency boarding up may be needed whenever damage leaves a home, rental property or commercial premises exposed and the opening cannot be permanently repaired straight away. It is not limited to burglary damage.
How We Secure a Damaged Opening
Each opening is assessed before temporary boarding is fitted. The method used depends on what has been damaged, the condition of the surrounding structure and the available fixing points.
Our approach: Emergency boarding makes the damaged area safer and secures the opening temporarily. The next section explains who should complete the permanent repair.
Boarding Up Is Temporary. What Happens Next?
Once the damaged opening has been secured, the next step depends on whether the permanent repair involves the locking system, the door or frame, or the glass itself.
Permanent repairs should be arranged as soon as practical. Boarding protects the opening temporarily and should not be treated as a long-term substitute for repairing the damaged window, door or locking system.
Will Insurance Cover Emergency Boarding Up?
Emergency boarding up may be covered by a home, landlord or commercial insurance policy when temporary work is needed to prevent further access or damage after an insured incident. Coverage, limits and claim requirements vary, so check your policy and contact your insurer as soon as practical.
If it is safe to do so, take photographs or a short video of the damage before work begins. Do not approach loose glass or an unstable opening to obtain evidence. Keep all invoices and receipts relating to the temporary boarding and subsequent repairs. If the incident has been reported to the police, retain the crime reference number for your claim.
Contact your insurer’s emergency helpline before authorising work where practical. If the property cannot safely remain exposed while you wait for a response, arrange the temporary security needed, document the damage and follow the insurer’s claims instructions as soon as possible.
What Happens When You Call for Emergency Boarding Up?
Calling for emergency boarding up is straightforward. Provide as much information as you safely can so we can understand the damage, explain the likely work and give you a current arrival estimate.
